Pedro House | Country House | Castro Laboreiro | Peneda-Gerês National Park

Description

Amidst mountains, traditions and breathtaking scenery, discover this retreat where nature sets the pace and every stay becomes an authentic experience!

Welcome to Casa do Pedro, a small mountain cottage lovingly restored, situated in the Cainheiras winter pasture in Castro Laboreiro, in the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

With its genuine character and welcoming atmosphere, this house invites you to slow down, breathe in the fresh air and discover the beauty of one of the most authentic regions of the Alto Minho.

The name Casa do Pedro stems from the owner’s family nickname, preserving an emotional connection to his roots and to the stories that form part of this land’s identity. More than just accommodation, it is an invitation to experience life in the mountain villages, where traditions are still alive and nature is part of everyday life.

Restored to ensure a comfortable stay, Casa do Pedro is spread over two floors and can accommodate up to 5 guests, making it ideal for families, small groups or couples seeking tranquillity, authenticity and a connection with nature.

On the upper floor, you’ll find the kitchen, fully equipped for preparing your own meals, a guest bathroom and a cosy living room.

The living room features a sofa bed for two people, a television, Wi-Fi and electric heating, creating a comfortable atmosphere in which to relax after a day spent exploring the mountains.
The suite, accessible exclusively from inside the house via a flight of stairs, offers a secluded space to rest and recharge your batteries.

It features a double bed, a sofa bed that can accommodate a child, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. A practical and cosy option for those who value privacy and comfort.

Outside, the terrace invites you to enjoy life’s simple pleasures: having breakfast al fresco, reading a book in the sun, savouring an aperitif in the late afternoon or simply taking in the surrounding landscape.

Here, the silence, the fresh air and the imposing presence of the mountain create the perfect setting to switch off from the daily grind and rediscover the pleasure of life’s simple joys.

Cainheiras and the identity of the winter pastures

Casa do Pedro is situated in Cainheiras, one of the traditional winter settlements of Castro Laboreiro. To truly understand this place, it is important to be familiar with one of the most distinctive aspects of the culture of Castro Laboreiro: the traditional organisation of life between the ‘brandas’ and the winter settlements.

For generations, the families of Castro Laboreiro have adapted their way of life to the harsh conditions of the mountains, moving seasonally between different settlements.

The ‘brandas’, situated at higher altitudes, were traditionally occupied during the milder months. The ‘inverneiras’, located in the valleys and in more sheltered areas, offered protection from the cold and the winter winds.

This way of life, deeply rooted in pastoralism, agriculture and the management of natural resources, has left a unique mark on the landscape: stone houses, ancient paths, bridges, walls, marshes and small villages that tell stories of resilience, adaptation and community.

Staying at Casa do Pedro is, therefore, an opportunity to experience this living heritage at first hand, in a place where traditional architecture and the landscape remain intimately linked.

In the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park

Castro Laboreiro forms part of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, one of Portugal’s most extraordinary natural areas. Here, the mountains, deep valleys, crystal-clear rivers, waterfalls and woodlands combine to create a landscape of rare beauty.

The region offers a constant invitation to explore nature, whatever the season.

The flora includes oak woods, birch trees, holly, heather and other species characteristic of mountain environments. The watercourses and woodland areas provide important habitats for various species of wildlife, including otters, water moles, birds of prey and other wild animals. The Iberian wolf is also one of the region’s iconic species.

Spotting wildlife depends on the time of year, natural conditions and each visitor’s luck. The best way to discover this wealth of wildlife is to walk the trails with respect for nature and without disturbing the animals.
